Key Figures of the Industrial Revolution: Inventors, Entrepreneurs, and Reformers

The Industrial Revolution was a process, and a generation of particular men and women whose decisions, inventions, and writing shaped its course. This cluster profiles some of the most important figures of the period, from the engineers and entrepreneurs who built the new industrial system to the reformers and critics who tried to limit its worst effects.

The figure that most often stands at the center of the Industrial Revolution is James Watt, the Scottish instrument maker whose improvements to the steam engine made it the universal power source of the industrial age. Working in partnership with the Birmingham manufacturer Matthew Boulton, Watt transformed the steam engine from a clumsy pumping machine into a reliable source of rotary motion suitable for factories, mines, and eventually railways and ships.

Another pivotal figure is George Stephenson, the self-taught mining engineer who designed the Rocket locomotive and helped establish the basic form of the steam railway. Stephenson’s career, from a poor family in the northeast of England to a position of national prominence, illustrates the new social mobility of the industrial age.

Robert Owen, the Welsh manufacturer and social reformer, represents a different kind of contribution. Owen made his fortune in the cotton mills of New Lanark in Scotland, but he is better remembered for his attempt to build a more humane industrial community, with shorter hours, better housing, schools for children, and cooperative arrangements for workers. Owen’s ideas influenced the development of utopian socialism, the cooperative movement, and the early trade union movement, and his career marks the beginning of organized opposition to the worst effects of industrialization.

In the United States, Eli Whitney is best known as the inventor of the cotton gin, the device that transformed the American South and tied it firmly into the British industrial economy as a supplier of raw cotton. Whitney also pioneered the use of interchangeable parts in manufacturing, a key step toward the mass production techniques of the twentieth century.

Richard Arkwright, the wig maker turned cotton manufacturer, built the first water-powered cotton mills and became one of the richest men in Britain. Matthew Boulton, Watt’s partner, was one of the great entrepreneurs of the age, and his Birmingham factory, the Soho Manufactory, was a model of industrial organization. Josiah Wedgwood transformed the pottery industry with new techniques and a new approach to marketing. George Stephenson and his son Robert dominated the early railway industry. The list could go on.

Inventors and Engineers

The engineers of the Industrial Revolution were a diverse group, ranging from university-trained men of science to self-taught craftsmen and practical mechanics. James Watt was a trained instrument maker who learned his trade at the University of Glasgow. George Stephenson was the son of a coal miner, with no formal education, who taught himself mathematics and engineering. Thomas Newcomen was a Dartmouth ironmonger. Richard Trevithick, the Cornish engineer who built the first steam locomotive, was the son of a mining captain. What these figures had in common was a practical orientation, a willingness to experiment, and an ability to combine new ideas with existing techniques.

Entrepreneurs

The industrial age was also shaped by a new kind of entrepreneur. The first generation of factory owners, like Arkwright, combined technical skill with business acumen. Women in the Industrial Revolution

Although fewer women than men appear in the standard histories of the Industrial Revolution, women played important roles as workers, managers, and reformers. The early textile mills, especially in the cotton industry, employed large numbers of women and children, and women were among the first to be affected by the new industrial discipline. Women also worked in mining, in the clothing trades, and in the new factories of the American Industrial Revolution. The female reformers of the period, including figures like Hannah Greg, Elizabeth Bentley, and Frances Trollope, wrote about working conditions and helped to put the case for reform on the political agenda.

The Importance of the Individual

The emphasis on individual figures in the history of the Industrial Revolution can be misleading. The transformation of industry was a collective process that involved millions of workers, consumers, and citizens, and the role of individuals, however talented, was only part of the story. The focus on heroes like Watt and Stephenson, however, serves a useful purpose: it makes the history memorable, and it illustrates the ways in which particular people, in particular circumstances, can shape the direction of historical change.

The “Heroes and Villains” Approach: A Critique

The approach of profiling individual figures has been criticized by a long line of social historians since the 1960s. E. P. Thompson’s The Making of the English Working Class (1963) argued that the “great men” approach to the Industrial Revolution was misleading, and that the real subject of historical inquiry should be the experience of the working class. Eric Hobsbawm and George Rudé made a similar point in Captain Swing (1969) and elsewhere, emphasizing the role of collective action and the experience of ordinary workers. The Annales school, including Fernand Braudel and Emmanuel Le Roy Ladurie, argued for a “history from below” that focused on the long-term structures of economic, social, and demographic change rather than on the actions of individuals. The most influential synthesis, T. S. Ashton’s The Industrial Revolution, 1760-1830 (1948), treated the individual figures as examples of larger social processes rather than as the drivers of those processes. The “great men” approach survives, in part, because the figures are interesting in their own right and because the public history of the Industrial Revolution has been built around them, but the more sophisticated scholarship has moved beyond the heroic model.

Boulton, Wedgwood, and the Industrial Entrepreneurs

Two other figures deserve particular mention. Matthew Boulton (1728-1809) was Watt’s partner and one of the great entrepreneurs of the Industrial Revolution. Boulton took over the Soho Manufactory in Birmingham in 1762 and built it into one of the largest and most advanced industrial enterprises in Britain, with 700-800 workers by 1789 and a wide range of metal products, including the famous “Soho” candlesticks and buttons. Boulton’s partnership with Watt, which began in 1775, was the prototype of the research-based industrial firm, and Boulton’s Soho Mint, established in 1788, was the model for the modern state coinage system. Josiah Wedgwood (1730-1795), the master potter, transformed the pottery industry with his introduction of the jasperware and black basalt wares, his use of the steam engine, his employment of skilled designers, and his development of new marketing techniques. The Wedgwood company, which still exists, was one of the first modern industrial corporations, and Josiah’s grandson, Charles Darwin’s father-in-law, was a member of the same Lunar Society that included Watt, Boulton, and Erasmus Darwin.

The American Figures: Whitney, Morse, Bell, and Edison

The American Industrial Revolution produced its own set of famous figures, and the standard narrative is built around Eli Whitney, Samuel Morse, Alexander Graham Bell, Thomas Edison, and the Wright brothers. Whitney (1765-1825) is best known for the cotton gin of 1793, which made short-staple cotton profitable, and for his development of interchangeable parts in musket manufacture, an early example of mass production. Morse (1791-1872) was the artist and inventor who developed the telegraph and Morse code, and he demonstrated the new technology in 1844 with a message sent from Washington to Baltimore. Bell (1847-1922) developed the telephone, patented in 1876, and his Bell Telephone Company, incorporated in 1877, became the foundation of the modern American telephone system. Edison (1847-1931) was the most prolific American inventor, with 1,093 patents, and his Menlo Park and West Orange laboratories were the prototype of the modern industrial research laboratory. Friedrich EngelsThe Condition of the Working Class in England (1845) is the most famous single document of the early critique of industrialization. Sir Robert Peel (1788-1850) was the Conservative prime minister who repealed the Corn Laws in 1846, in the face of opposition from the agricultural interest of his own party, and he was the first politician to recognize that the new industrial middle class had to be incorporated into the political system. William Gladstone (1809-1898), four times prime minister, was the principal architect of the British liberal state, with the Reform Acts of 1867 and 1884, the Education Act of 1870, the Irish Land Acts, and the first wave of social legislation. Benjamin Disraeli (1804-1881), twice Conservative prime minister, was the principal architect of the modern Conservative Party, with the Reform Act of 1867, the Public Health Act of 1875, and the “one nation” conservatism that defined the Tory response to industrial society. In the United States, Henry Clay (1777-1852) and Daniel Webster (1782-1852) developed the Whig response to industrialization, and Abraham Lincoln (1809-1865) was the founder of the Republican Party and the political architect of the American industrial state. The figures of the Industrial Revolution are, in many ways, the figures of the modern world. The network of social, economic, and political relationships that Watt, Stephenson, Owen, Boulton, Wedgwood, Whitney, Morse, Bell, and Edison helped to create has shaped the world in which we now live. The carbon dioxide that the steam engine and the internal combustion engine have put into the atmosphere is the principal cause of climate change. The factory system that Crompton and Whitney helped to develop is the model for the global supply chain. The legal form of the corporation that the Carnegie and Rockefeller enterprises pioneered is the dominant form of business organization in the world. The communications network that Morse and Bell and Marconi helped to build is the foundation of the global internet. The great fortunes that were made in coal and iron and oil and railroads in the late 19th century have shaped the distribution of wealth in the 21st century. The Industrial Revolution, in short, is not a historical curiosity; it is the foundation of the modern world, and the figures of the period are the people who built it.
